       About

    Coronavirus News Explained will be hosting a COVID-19 writing contest with the help of Matria, a non-profit organization that promotes STEM in young students. Coronavirus News Explained is a blog created in April 2020 with weekly posts of COVID-19 related information taken from peer-reviewed and validated scientific journals. The purpose of this COVID-19 writing contest is to encourage young students/writers interested in STEM to take advancements in their education in an extracurricular setting that combines English with the Sciences.

        The contest is open to anyone between the ages of 10-18 who is interested in science and writing. The entry pieces for this contest may be an informative piece inspired by the research type posts on Coronavirus News Explained or a personal piece relating to the current pandemic. The contest will be divided into two age groups, each with a $100 amazon gift card for first place winners and features on the Coronavirus News Explained Blog (See below for details). Contest entries will be judged by the organizers of this contest and founders of Coronavirus News Explained and Matria. The deadline is November 30, 2020 at 11:59pm PST and winners will be announced in December.

Writing Guidelines

Participants have the option of entering either a research piece or personal piece. All entries have a 600 word limit and must relate to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Research pieces should take on a similar format as the posts written on Coronavirus News Explained. A reliable scientific journal must be cited and the language it is written is encouraged to be simplified for the layperson. Please avoid copy and pasting content from the original paper. Choose a topic that not only seems to present significant findings, but also interests you!
  • Personal pieces may also be submitted. These entries should relate to how the pandemic has affected your life or the lives of other people that you may know. The personal piece writing category is more open ended so this is your chance to get creative!
